FIELD NOTE 01
Taurasi and Vulture
Taurasi is in Irpinia, Campania; Vulture is located in northern Basilicata. Both are inland, but they are not alternative names for the same region. Both the province and production area differ.
When you place the two on a map, you see that just calling them 'southern' doesn't explain the vineyard conditions. Altitude of hills and mountains, as well as the aspect of the slopes, also contribute to the comparison.
FIELD NOTE 02
Tannin, acidity, and maturation
Understanding Aglianico wines centers on the relationship between tannin and acidity. However, factors such as grape ripening, methods of extraction, and the period of aging will affect the wine’s character.
If early firmness is attributed only to a grape variety, you may overlook the effects of producer style and tasting timing.
FIELD NOTE 03
Conditions included in the appellation name.
Taurasi and Aglianico del Vulture each have their own production regulations. Furthermore, in Vulture, distinguish between Aglianico del Vulture DOC and the DOCG that includes Superiore.
Even if the grape varieties are the same, the region and maturation conditions are not necessarily identical. By aligning the official label names and then comparing, it becomes clear which regulation applies to the wine.
When comparing Aglianico regions, align the locations of Taurasi and Vulture, note their formal appellation names, and compare their aging requirements.
