Abruzzo

From the Adriatic Sea to the high mountains: Red and rosé of Montepulciano.

01 / GEOGRAPHY

Topography and Growing Environment

From the mountain ranges of Gran Sasso and Maiella, hills descend toward the Adriatic Sea. Even though the coast and the mountains are close, the elevation and location of vineyards are not the same. By understanding both distance from the coast/inland areas and elevation, you can grasp specific differences in cultivation conditions within the region.

02 / HISTORY

Historical and regional background

Under a landscape where mountainous and coastal areas are close, people have lived and practiced agriculture. In terms of wine, in addition to reds made from Montepulciano, there is Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo rosé. This is an example in which a single black grape is crafted into different styles.

04 / A CLOSER LOOK

Varieties and Appellation Comparison

Here, Montepulciano refers to a grape variety and not the town of the same name in Tuscany. Also, differences in red and rosé colors do not prove different varieties. By matching the official appellation name, grape composition, and winemaking methods such as skin contact, you can explain the differences between the two.

Let’s think about it

When comparing Montepulciano d'Abruzzo red with Cerasuolo rosé, is the difference found in the variety or in winemaking method?
