From upstream to downstream in the valley, altitude and main grape varieties change.

01 / GEOGRAPHY

Topography and Growing Environment

Vineyards continue along the banks of the Dora Baltea River through mountain regions. Upstream at higher elevations and downstream on warmer slopes, growing conditions are different. Even though the area is surrounded by the Alps, not all vineyards share the same cold climate. Sun exposure on slopes and the direction of valleys shape the environment for each vineyard.

02 / HISTORY

Historical and regional background

Stone walls and terraces have been built on steep slopes, and people have maintained arable land. It is also a region where people travel over mountain passes, so French-language place and grape names remain. The description 'Vallée d’Aoste' on labels also serves as a key to connect the land with its culture.

04 / A CLOSER LOOK

Varieties and Appellation Comparison

From the combination of Prie Blanc in the upper reaches, Petit Rouge in the middle, and Nebbiolo in the lower reaches, you can grasp how grape varieties change along the river. Even within the same region, different varieties are tied to the local conditions of each growing area. The locations of Morgex, Torrette, and Donnas serve as landmarks on the map to confirm these differences.

Let’s think about it

How can you relate the difference in main grape varieties between the upper and lower parts of the valley to altitude and slope conditions?
