REGION 20 / Islands

Sardegna

Sardinia

Gallura and the entire island. Even with the same variety, appellation coverage differs.

01 / GEOGRAPHY

Topography and Growing Environment

In Gallura in the northeast, the inland mountains, and the southwest, the conditions differ in terms of elevation, rock type, and sea breeze. You cannot understand the environment of each vineyard merely because they are all on an island. By specifying a regional name, you can use a map to check how far the boundaries of a wine's designation extend.

02 / HISTORY

Historical and regional background

Local grape variety names have been used in the context of Mediterranean exchange. Explanations about the origins of these varieties include both verifiable facts and hypotheses. Similarity in names and the history of exchange alone cannot conclusively determine the route of introduction.

04 / A CLOSER LOOK

Varieties and Appellation Comparison

Vermentino di Gallura and Vermentino di Sardegna are appellations for the same variety but different regions. Furthermore, there are also reds such as Cannonau and Carignano, so you cannot describe the whole island with Vermentino alone. Both the grape name and the region that follows indicate the origin.

Let’s think about it

Can you tell the difference between Gallura and Sardegna from the grape name Vermentino alone?
