Friuli-Venezia Giulia

Learn the differences in white grape varieties and winemaking between border hills and plains.

01 / GEOGRAPHY

Topography and Growing Environment

Near the Slovenian border, there are hills, with plains extending toward the Adriatic Sea. In Collio, the layered soils of marl and sandstone are also characteristic. Once you know the region names, check whether a vineyard lies on a hill or plain and which appellation area it is in to narrow down its location.

02 / HISTORY

Historical and regional background

At cultural intersections across borders, there is diversity in place names, grape varieties, and winemaking methods. Some producers ferment white grapes with the skins, but not the entire region uses the same method. Even if the land is shared, choices in winemaking vary.

04 / A CLOSER LOOK

Varieties and Appellation Comparison

Friulano and Ribolla Gialla can be linked to the positions of Collio and Friuli Colli Orientali. When comparing white wines, in addition to grape variety and location, it is also necessary to consider skin contact and aging methods. Even with the same white grape, the color and texture change depending on the winemaking.

Let’s think about it

When comparing white wines from Friuli, which winemaking conditions would you want to check in addition to grape variety and region?
