Aglianico: Southern Hills and Aging Conditions

Check the locations of Campania and Basilicata on a map, and distinguish between grape ripening in the vineyard and maturation after winemaking. Compare minimum appellation standards and differences in individual wine production.

Questions for this course

Even with the same Aglianico, how do you compare Taurasi and Vulture?

Before you start reading, briefly jot down your thoughts. You will rephrase them at the end.

Aglianico / Learning from grape varieties

Update date: 2026-09-23

Southern Italy: Mountains and Hills

Taurasi is located in Irpinia, Campania and Vulture is around a volcano in Basilicata. While both are in southern Italy, vineyard conditions are not explained by coastal heat alone. In Irpinia, altitude and day-night temperature differences in the mountains matter, and in Vulture, wind on the hills and temperature variations are also factors. After confirming the region, compare vineyard elevations and slopes to track differing growing conditions for the same grape.

Ripening before harvest and maturation in bottle

For Aglianico, separate your consideration of the time grapes spend ripening in the vineyard and the time after they become wine. Vulture regulations describe slow ripening, sometimes extending the harvest into November. By contrast, Taurasi has requirements for the post-fermentation aging period. Late harvesting and long post-fermentation aging are separate factors. Comparison materials should keep records of harvest period and aging separately.

Check conditions of the appellation and actual maturation.

Taurasi requires at least 3 years of aging, including at least 1 year in oak barrels. This is the minimum requirement—this does not mean all producers age in identical barrels for the same length. Also, Aglianico del Vulture Superiore is a different DOCG. Since the Aglianico grape name alone does not indicate which rules apply, always check the official name on the label.

Each hypothesis or reflection can be up to 2,000 characters. You can save your answers even if you only select an option.

1. How many months is B aged in wooden barrels?
2. What does the difference in periods between A and B reveal?
3. Is B always pronouncedly oaky?

For how many months is B matured in wooden barrels?
The table counts a total of 42 months, including 18 months in oak barrels. The barrel period is part of the overall time; do not add the two together as 60 months. When comparing maturation, clearly separate time in each vessel from the overall duration.

What can be inferred from the difference in duration between A and B?
The provisions indicate minimum conditions, so actual aging periods can differ even within the same designation. The two bottles indicated meet the stated minimum period. However, this table alone does not determine compliance with all requirements, including for region and raw materials.

Does B always have a strong barrel aroma?
Knowing only the time spent in wood barrels does not indicate capacity, age of the barrel, or influence on the wine. This information is missing from the table. Do not directly link long barrel periods with intense oak aromas or superior quality; check details of the vessels and actual condition.

Explain in your own words

Indicate that both wines include maturation in wooden barrels, and give a reason why taste and quality cannot be determined simply by the number of months aged.

Check after writing

  • Did you distinguish between the period in wood barrels and the total aging period?
  • Did you separate minimum requirements from actual records?
  • Did you point out any lack of detail about barrel specifications or storage conditions?
