Taurasi DOCG

Taurasi

Taurasi is a Campanian inland red wine based mainly on Aglianico. Compared to Vulture, which uses the same grape, you see that there are diverse regions with hillsides even within southern Italy.

RELATIONSHIPS

Surveying the two regions through Aglianico.

Standardize the varieties to make comparisons of the terroir.

When comparing individual labels, producer and vintage differences are also included. The diagram's branches represent regional differences, not qualitative superiority of aromas and flavors. Sources and reference materials

FIELD NOTE 01

Inland hills of Irpinia

Taurasi is located in Irpinia, Campania. Unlike the coastal environment you might associate with Naples, cultivation here is affected by hilly, inland terrain and elevation.

By narrowing down from the province name Campania, you can specifically compare distance to the sea and topography. Even when considering southern Italian wines, vineyard elevation is required.

FIELD NOTE 02

Aglianico and appellation regulations

Taurasi is an appellation mainly for Aglianico, with specified grape varieties and aging requirements. You cannot know all these conditions from the variety name alone.

Aglianico del Vulture from neighboring region Basilicata has its own designated area and regulations. The two names distinguish wines from the same variety based on their origin.

FIELD NOTE 03

Criteria for comparing Vulture

When comparing two regions, specific aspects include vineyard altitude, topography, and appellation regulations. Additionally, differences in extraction and aging by producer may also apply.

If you compare only one Taurasi and one Vulture wine, differences between region and producer are both reflected. You cannot conclude the nature of the whole area from this comparison alone.

Key points of this article

Taurasi and Vulture are separate regions sharing Aglianico. Include zone and producer conditions in comparisons.

PAUSE & REFLECT

Check your understanding.

If you compare just one Taurasi and one Vulture wine brand, will you be able to tell only the differences between the regions?

Read the explanation +

Producer, year, and differences in winemaking/maturation are all included. To consider both similarities and differences in a region, it is necessary to confirm the conditions of the bottles being compared.
