01 / GEOGRAPHY

Topography and Growing Environment

A long and narrow province stretching from the northern Murgia plateau to the southern Salento. It faces both the Adriatic and Ionian Seas, but not all of it is flat lowland. Inland altitude and distance to the sea vary, so even the same variety grows under different conditions depending on location.

Historical and regional background

In addition to its role as a major wine-producing region, wines are also sold indicating the region and grape variety. Primitivo, renowned in export markets, is one example. Within the region, there are also production areas for other red varieties such as Nero di Troia and Negroamaro.
