FIELD NOTE 01

The three sparkling varieties

Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Meunier are central to learning about English sparkling. Even blends with black grapes can produce white sparkling, so also consider pressing and skin management together. For labels like Blanc de Blancs, check not only the general image but also the specific requirements for each designation.

FIELD NOTE 02

Spread of still wines

Bacchus is an important aromatic white variety, easily linked to eastern regions. There are also still wine examples for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Even with the same variety name, differences in harvest ripeness, fermentation vessels, and barrel or lees usage can yield divergent styles, so don't explain the country exclusively through sparkling wines.

FIELD NOTE 03

Viticultural suitability and certification

By adding Seyval Blanc, Solaris, Rondo and others, you can also learn about varietal selection suited to cool, humid environments. However, disease resistance, early ripening, and PDO eligibility are separate matters. Especially, do not equate vinifera crossings with interspecific hybrids, and be sure to check against permitted varieties in the regulations.
