FIELD NOTE 01

Geography

Read the vineyards spreading from Monmouthshire in the southeast and Carmarthenshire in the southwest. Welsh vineyards are not concentrated in one place. The main locations on the map serve as a starting point for study, but don’t forget there are producers in the north and central regions, and it's important to individually check the influence of the sea and slopes.

FIELD NOTE 02

Grape variety and style

In addition to Seyval Blanc, Solaris, and the black Rondo, Chardonnay and Pinot varieties are also present. Which grapes to grow under cool, humid conditions and which label classification to select are related but not the same decision. Don’t judge quality solely by whether a variety is international; assess the health of the grapes and the final quality of the wine.

FIELD NOTE 03

To Appellations & winemaking

There is a range of production methods including still, traditional sparkling, and pét-nat. Review the differences between the Welsh PDO and Welsh Regional PGI, and check that the grape varieties used comply with each specification. It’s important not to assume that all Welsh products are PDO just because of their origin.
