Nyetimber: Multi-year blending and single-vintage Chardonnay.

This is a producer of English sparkling wine. They make a classic cuvée blending Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Meunier, as well as a Blanc de Blancs made exclusively from Chardonnay. For each wine, they choose whether to blend multiple vintages or make a single-vintage expression.

This compares the general specifications of Classic Cuvée with those of Blanc de Blancs 2018. Read the range-based component declarations, reserve wine content, and the single-vintage aspect separately.

Three varieties, multiple harvest years

Classic Cuvée is a blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Meunier from multiple vintages. The official notes state that it combines grapes from several estate vineyards and several years. Site and harvest year are separate axes; it is not a single-vineyard nor a single-vintage wine.

Summing blend ranges

Chardonnay 55–65%, Pinot Noir 30–40%, Meunier 5–15% are the usual stated ranges. The upper limits total 120%, but this does not mean the blend in any one bottle. Don’t combine the extremes arbitrarily—check the actual blend for each lot from the bottle information.

Reserve is not a fourth grape variety.

Classic Cuvée’s reserve wine content is stated to be 20–35%. This figure refers to the proportion of base wines from previous vintages used; it is not a “fourth variety” added to the three main varieties. By separately recording the varietal composition and vintage composition, you can avoid confusing the two proportions.

Blanc de Blancs 2018

The Blanc de Blancs 2018 as listed at the time of confirmation is a 100% Chardonnay from a single vintage. The origin column shows both West Sussex and Hampshire. Even if it is a single variety and single vintage, it is not necessarily a single vineyard, so confirm all three conditions individually.

By answering in the selection field, you can compare your answers and explanations using the top button. Freeform responses will not be automatically graded.

Why does the sum of the maximum proportions for the three varieties add up to 120%?
The stated values fall within the general specifications. It is not stated that all maximums are used simultaneously, so batch-specific information is needed to know the exact blend in a single bottle.

What does '20–35% reserve wine' refer to?
Separate from blend ratio, this is information that shows how the harvest years of the base wines are assembled. Reserve wines also have grape varieties, so you cannot simply add them onto the percentages of the three varieties.

What can be confirmed from Blanc de Blancs 2018?
It is confirmed that 2018 is 100% Chardonnay, but the region field lists two regions. Even if the variety and year are singular, you cannot necessarily specify a single vineyard.

Check after writing

  • Have you fixed the range of ratios at a constant figure?
  • Make sure not to add 'reserve' as a grape variety.
  • Did you distinguish between single vintage, single-varietal, and single-vineyard?
