Kozlović: Malvazija Vineyards and Maturation Vessels
A family-run estate in Istria, Croatia, operating since 1904. They focus on the local white grape Malvazija Istriana, and also produce single-vineyard whites from Santa Lucia and reds blended with Merlot, among others.
Compare technical data for Malvasia 2020 and Santa Lucia Malvasia 2018. Even with the same variety, vineyard range, skin contact, and maturation methods differ.

Multiple vineyards versus a single vineyard
Malvasia 2020 sources grapes from the Valle, Santa Lucia, and Contarini vineyards. On the other hand, Santa Lucia Malvasia 2018 is single vineyard. Even if vineyard names overlap, the full sourcing area is not identical.
Skin contact before pressing.
The skin contact time at low temperature is 12–24 hours for Malvasia 2020, and 5–6 days for Santa Lucia 2018. This is followed by pressing. Read this time separately from the number of months aged in barrels or tanks.
5,000L wooden casks and stainless steel
Malvasia 2020 is aged for 7 months in stainless steel. Santa Lucia 2018 is aged 12 months in a 50 hL oak barrel and then 12 months in stainless steel, according to the technical notes. 50 hL is 5,000 L. Do not equate the use of large barrels with the use of small new oak barrels.
Red made from the same vineyard
Santa Lucia Noir 2017 is a red wine with 50% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 20% Teran. Santa Lucia is a vineyard name and does not by itself specify the grape variety or wine color. Related varietal courses also cover the Merlot and Cabernet used in this red.

Read the explanation for each question
By answering in the selection field, you can compare your answers and explanations using the top button. Freeform responses will not be automatically graded.
How many liters are in a 50hL wooden cask?
1hL is 100L, so 5,000L. By standardizing the unit, you can compare barrel sizes.
What does the name Santa Lucia indicate?
There is both a white Malvasia and a red blend from the same single-vineyard name. Confirm vineyard, grape, and color separately.
Besides the grape variety, what other conditions vary between these two white wines?
These two white wines share the same variety, but have different vineyards, years, and processes. Do not explain aroma and flavor differences simply by the number of maturation months.
Basis and sources for the exercise
Practice exercises in comparison
Match up the raw materials, vineyard, and process from the documentation, and explain which conditions are constant in the comparison and which ones vary.

Explain in your own words
Compare the vineyard origins, the time before pressing, and the maturation vessels of the two white wines, and explain what cannot be known from the name Santa Lucia alone.
Check after writing
- Did you distinguish between three vineyards and a single vineyard?
- Did you match time, days, and months with the stages of the process?
- Are vineyard names separated from color and grape variety?
