FIELD NOTE 01
Graševina
Graševina corresponds to Welschriesling and is the principal white grape of the interior. Knowledge connects to Laški Rizling in Slovenia. Remember it as distinct from Rheinriesling. Because it is made into both fresh, young whites and age-worthy wines, do not fix the drinking window based on the variety name alone.
FIELD NOTE 02
Coastal whites and reds
Malvazija Istarska is key in Istria, Plavac Mali (black) in Dalmatia. Pošip, Grk, Babić, and Žlahtina from Kvarner should also be tied to specific regions. Do not treat all varieties with the widespread Malvasia name, including those of Italy and elsewhere, as the same grape.
FIELD NOTE 03
Synonyms and Different Varieties
While Tribidrag, Crljenak Kaštelanski, and Zinfandel are associated as synonyms, Plavac Mali is not considered the same variety. Lineage and synonymy are different matters. In your notes, connecting “synonyms of the same variety” and “different varieties to compare” with different lines makes the name associations less confusing.
Do not regard as the same since they are different varieties. Organize synonyms such as Tribidrag as alternative names for Zinfandel.
