Domaines Vinsmoselle: Crémant Varietal Blend and Lees Aging

This is a cooperative of growers along the Moselle River in Luxembourg. The current organization was formed in 1966 by merging several cooperatives, and launched the Crémant brand Pol Fabaire in 1991.

Compare Paul Faber Brut and Chardonnay Brut. While both are labeled Brut, there are differences in the grape blend and the period of contact with the lees.

Questions for this course

If it’s labeled Brut, does that mean the same grapes and aging time are used?

Before you start reading, briefly jot down your thoughts. You will rephrase them at the end.

Cooperatives and Brands

Vannes Moselle is the producer organization's name; Paul Faber is the brand name for Crémant. The cooperative's founding and the brand's launch are separate events. On labels, you can organize the information by reading producer, brand, and product name distinctly.

Brut’s four varieties

Brut combines Auxerrois, Pinot Blanc, Riesling, and Chardonnay. The varietal ratios are not listed on the product page. Listing all four names does not mean each is present in equal (25%) parts.

Cuvée selection with Chardonnay

Chardonnay Brut is a Crémant of only Chardonnay. Both wines are made by the traditional method, but the blends are arranged differently under the same winemaking process.

Minimum 12 months and minimum 24 months

The period resting on the lees is at least 12 months for Brut, and at least 24 months for Chardonnay Brut. Even though both indicate "Brut" dryness, their timelines do not match. Note that "minimum" does not indicate the precise number of months for every bottle.
