FIELD NOTE 01
Mountain rain shadow and lakes
Okanagan in BC’s inland area is a dry region located in the rain shadow of the coastal mountains. Lakes connect its long north-south valleys, influencing summer temperatures and autumn warmth. It's necessary to distinguish between its high latitude and, separately, information on summer heat and sunlight.
FIELD NOTE 02
North-south varietal differences
There is a range, from whites and Pinot Noir in relatively cool areas to Merlot, Syrah, and Cabernet family varieties in the south. Not all grape varieties ripen the same way throughout the entire valley. Remember the sequence of locations: Kelowna, Penticton, Oliver, and Osoyoos.
FIELD NOTE 03
Proceed to the micro-region
In Sub-GIs such as Naramata Bench, examine the slope aspect relative to the lake and differences in sunlight exposure. ‘Bench’ evokes a type of topography, but its extent on labels should be checked against registered GIs. Don’t assume a region’s character is defined solely by its warm summers—severe winter cold must also be considered.
No contradiction. In continental inland areas, hot summers and harsh winters both occur.
PAUSE & REFLECT
Check your understanding.
