FIELD NOTE 01

Extent of inland areas

Besides Okanagan, there are Similkameen, Thompson, Lillooet, Shuswap, and Kootenays. Do not treat these as alternate names for a single valley; confirm their positions on a map. The orientation of mountains and valleys changes wind and rain, so even within the interior, ripening conditions vary.

FIELD NOTE 02

Three regions close to the sea

Vancouver Island, Gulf Islands, and Fraser Valley are influenced by the sea. Fraser receives more rainfall than inland regions, so describing all of BC as a dry semi-desert is inaccurate. Cultivation challenges also shift from water scarcity to managing rain and diseases.

FIELD NOTE 03

Standardize axes of comparison

Compare the ripeness of fruit, acidity, and oak influence between coastal and inland Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, etc. Also check whether the winery's address and the GI of the grapes are the same. Knowing only that the wine was bottled within the state does not reveal if the vineyard is coastal or inland.
