FIELD NOTE 01
Ontario's coverage
VQA Ontario requires 100% Ontario-grown grapes. The Niagara Peninsula designation requires at least 85% from the peninsula, with the remainder also from Ontario. In contrast, sub-appellations like Four Mile Creek require 100% from that smaller region. The percentage requirements differ between larger regions and sub-appellations.
FIELD NOTE 02
Current standards in BC
For BC VQA, the use of grapes grown within the province is a prerequisite. According to current regulation Article 57, GIs more specific than the provincial name must contain at least 85% grapes from the relevant area, with the remainder allowed to be BC-grown grapes. Do not confuse this with the earlier 95% seen in pre-2025 amendment references; always check the date of the source.
FIELD NOTE 03
Distinguish the appellation system in the east
Quebec's IGP Vin du Québec is a certification rooted in the province, covering everything from vineyard to bottling. Nova Scotia's Tidal Bay has specific requirements for white wine style and mandatory evaluation. Don’t arrange VQA, IGP, and Tidal Bay in one national hierarchy; instead, learn which provinces they apply to and what types are covered.
Do not apply. Regulations differ by province; current Article 57 of BC stipulates 85% from the region and the remainder from within the province.

Check your understanding.
Can you apply the 100% sub-appellation requirement from Ontario to all GIs in BC without adjustment?
