FIELD NOTE 01

Geographical relationships.

From Colonia in the southwest, move north along the Río Uruguay to Paysandú, Salto, and Artigas. Although riverside location is a common feature, latitude, temperature, and alluvial deposits are not the same. Do not remember the area around Carmelo and the northwest of Colonia as one uniform region—distinguish their positions.

FIELD NOTE 02

Viticulture and grape varieties

In addition to Tannat, consider the ripening of Cabernet Sauvignon and other varieties from the standpoint of temperature and the length of the season. INAVI highlights rocky soils in Colonia and sandy or silty soils in the northwest. Rather than immediately linking soil names to taste, start by considering how drainage, water retention, and rooting environment interact.

FIELD NOTE 03

How to proceed with comparison

When comparing northern and southern Tannat, confirm if you are looking at the same vintage or same maturation. Do not explain ripe fruit impressions or soft tannins by temperature alone. List growing and winemaking conditions in two columns, leaving items you cannot verify blank to form questions for further investigation.

Key points of this article

Check the grape variety, vintage, extraction and maturation conditions, and don’t attribute the flavor differences only to climate.

PAUSE & REFLECT
