Garzón: Tannat and large barrels

Separate the roles of concrete fermentation and large untoasted cask ageing.

Garzón Tannat: Match volume and process

Selecting an item will highlight and compare the corresponding section.

  1. 150 hL cement tank. Read together about capacity, material, and process.

  2. 50hL untosted oak foudre. Not a fermentation vessel.

  3. Observe the impression of tannins and barrels; do not judge intensity by container size alone.

150 hL and 50 hL are different vessel capacities. Do not confuse the size of the number with the length of maturation. To the supporting reference ↓

FIELD NOTE 01

2023 grape material and fermentation

According to the official technical data for Tannat Reserva 2023, it is 100% Tannat, fermented in 150hL cement tanks. 150hL equals 15,000L, referring to the capacity of the fermentation vessel. The size of the vessel alone doesn't tell you the temperature, stirring, or length of extraction. Let’s diagram the process based on the available conditions.

FIELD NOTE 02

The maturation vessel is different.

Maturation is carried out for 6–12 months in large, non-toasted French oak barrels of 50hL, or 5,000L. Do not confuse the 150hL fermentation vessel with the 50hL maturation vessel. Using wooden barrels is not synonymous with imparting strong toasty aromas or new oak flavors; the size and presence of toasting are important factors for comparison.

FIELD NOTE 03

Do not transfer numbers to other products.

The materials state: alcohol 14%, residual sugar 5.5g/L, and bottling in November 2024. The harvest year and bottling year are different. Do not apply the same process to Single Vineyard or other vintage Reservas from the same producer; compare using the correct product tier and year. Also, do not estimate barrel aging time based solely on the Reserva designation.
