FIELD NOTE 01
Starting from the South and the East
Center the southern axis around the capital Montevideo, Canelones, and San José. Maldonado and Rocha lie to the east, introducing the influence of the Atlantic Ocean. As you move west to Colonia, north to Rivera and Salto, and into the central Durazno region, you come to understand that the country cannot be described as a single coastal region.
FIELD NOTE 02
Viticulture in environments with water
Unlike Argentina’s dry, highland areas, here you often need to consider rainfall, humidity, and drainage. Canopy management for sunlight exposure, ventilation, and healthy grapes is also crucial. However, not all soils and precipitation are the same across the country. Look at the positions of rivers, seas, and hills before examining individual vineyards.
FIELD NOTE 03
From Tannat to white wines
While Tannat is the country's signature red variety, Merlot, Cabernets, and whites like Albariño and Chardonnay are also studied. Do not assume high tannin levels just because of the country; check extraction from skins and the aging vessels. Finally, comparing technical sheets for the same producer’s red and white makes the relationship between raw materials and processes clear.
Not usable. Consider sea and river influences, rainfall, humidity, drainage, and canopy management for each region.
PAUSE & REFLECT
Check your understanding.
Can growing conditions from the Andes' arid regions be applied as is?
