FIELD NOTE 01

Geographical relationships.

Place Rivera and Tacuarembó in the northeast, and Durazno and Florida in the central region on the map. Cerro Chapeu in Rivera is near the Brazilian border, known for its hills and red sandy soils. Also pay attention to Lavalleja and Treinta y Tres in the east-central region, and do not limit your view of wine regions to just the coast.

FIELD NOTE 02

Viticulture and grape varieties

INAVI describes Rivera as having deep, sandy soils with good drainage and more inland conditions than the coast. An important point is that maturation progresses relatively early in the central zone. Rather than judging coolness by elevation alone, consider latitude, sunlight, and rainfall timing together when thinking about harvest.

FIELD NOTE 03

How to proceed with comparison

When comparing Tannat and the Cabernet family, distinguish between regional explanations and individual product characteristics. The central and northern areas are not classified under a single legal appellation. This article serves as a starting overview for the entire country; for deeper study, match administrative areas or vineyard names with actual labels.

Key points of this article

Check the grape variety, vintage, extraction and maturation conditions, and don’t attribute the flavor differences only to climate.

PAUSE & REFLECT
