FIELD NOTE 01
Geographical relationships.
Group Canelones, Montevideo, and San José together as the southern area. The history of production that developed around the capital and the influence of the Río de la Plata are clues. The gently sloping terrain also contains soil differences, so do not treat the three administrative districts as the same in terms of vineyard conditions.
FIELD NOTE 02
Viticulture and grape varieties
Tannat is key, but whites such as Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Viognier can also be compared. In environments with rain and humidity, understanding drainage and canopy airflow is fundamental to comprehending grape quality. Do not end your tasting explanation with just the soil name—track your reasoning through viticultural and harvest decisions as well.
FIELD NOTE 03
How to proceed with comparison
If a producer owns vineyards in different regions, the address of the winery alone does not tell you the origin of the grapes in the bottle. When comparing Tannat from the southern region to Tannat from the Atlantic side, it is best to also match the vintage and maturation conditions. If the conditions being compared differ, make a note of them and avoid assuming that only the climate is the cause of differences.
Check the grape variety, vintage, extraction and maturation conditions, and don’t attribute the flavor differences only to climate.
