FIELD NOTE 01
Geography
To the west and northwest of London are the Thames Valley and the Chilterns, with vineyards scattered further into the midlands and north. On this map, the marker represents the midlands, but this is not the center of the region or the appellation boundary. It’s necessary to distinguish county and producer association divisions from the official indications of origin.
FIELD NOTE 02
Grape variety and style
In the Thames Chilterns, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Meunier for sparkling wine, as well as Bacchus for white, serve as guides. When moving further north, consider not only latitude, but also vineyard orientation, shelter from winds, and length of ripening period. Even if the same varieties are grown as in the south, harvest timing and wine style design may not be the same.
FIELD NOTE 03
To Appellations & winemaking
Even if statistics for the whole of the UK are increasing, this does not mean that cultivation is spreading at the same rate everywhere. When using area or production volume, retain the year and scope of survey. At the start of your study, prioritize understanding the main wine regions and how grape growing and winemaking choices adapt to cool climates, rather than memorizing rankings that change significantly.
Cannot be determined. Separately check the grape variety and region indication, and the processes of fermentation and maturation.
PAUSE & REFLECT
Check your understanding.
Can winemaking be decided only by the place names of the Thames basin and Midlands/North?
