Movia: Rebula Pressing and Extended Skin Contact
The Kristančič family has been producing wine since 1820, with vineyards extending across Goriška Brda in Slovenia and Collio in Italy. In addition to white wines using Rebula, they also make skin-contact wines like Lunar that spend long periods with the grape skins.
We compare the winemaking details for Rebula 2024 and Lunar Ribolla 2021. Even with the same grape variety, vineyard, vintage, and duration of skin contact can differ.

The same variety, different vineyard.
Both wines are shown as 100% Ribolla in the variety field. Rebula 2024 comes from the Presivo and Ceglo vineyards, while Lunar 2021 comes from the Fojana vineyard. Do not treat Rebula and Ribolla simply as separate varieties based on the name; also confirm the source of the grapes.
Rebula to be pressed into the press
The maceration section for Rebula 2024 notes that the grapes are pressed whole. Maturation takes place for 8 months in wood and steel containers. The tasting note on the Rebula 2024 page includes an annotation that it refers to the 2022 wine, so it should not be treated as a tasting note for 2024.
The Two Stages of Lunar
Lunar 2021 was macerated on the skins for 8 months and then matured for another 8 months in a 1,000L horizontal oval cask. While both stages are 8 months, the first is skin contact and the second is barrel aging. Separating these two processes clarifies the length of the maceration.
Bottling with the lees included
It is explained that Lunar is bottled unfiltered, together with its deposits. The residue at the bottom of the bottle should also be considered part of the production method. However, since the two bottles differ in both vintage and vineyard, differences in appearance and aroma cannot be attributed to the maceration period alone.
