Domaine Jean-Louis Chave: Hermitage from multiple lieux-dits

Based in Mauves in the Northern Rhône, this is a family domaine producing both red and white Hermitage and Saint-Joseph. Exporter’s materials describe the family’s history dating back to 1481 and list separately the domaine's wines and those of Jean-Louis Chave Sélection.

Read how plots are combined within Hermitage and how Domaine and Sélection are categorized.

Cellars and vineyards on the opposite bank.

The cellars in Mauves are located across the river from the Hermitage hill. When reading about wine regions, it is necessary to distinguish between the producer's address and the vineyard location. The domaine holds plots in several lieux-dits within Hermitage.

Separate base wines, then blend later

In addition to the main component from Les Bessards, base wines from other lieux-dits are used. After vinifying each plot separately, they are blended—a method showing that blends can be made within a single appellation. This is an example where blending does not only refer to combining multiple varieties.

Domaine and Selection

The materials have separate lists for domaine Hermitage wines and for selections like Mon Cœur or Offerus, even if all are by the same Chave estate. Confirm the difference in cuvées and business categories, even when the producer’s name is the same. Explanations of vineyards owned by the domaine cannot simply be mapped directly to all wines in the other lists.
