FIELD NOTE 01

Distinguishing Feteasca

Fetească Albă and Fetească Regală are white varieties, and Fetească Neagră is a black grape. Even with similar names, do not treat them as just color variations of the same wine. Studying the two white varieties in Târnave and the black in Dealu Mare and other regions ties them to place.

FIELD NOTE 02

Add regional varieties

Comparing Cotnari’s Grasă de Cotnari, Tămâioasă Românească, Fetească, Drăgășani’s Crâmpoșie and Negru de Drăgășani. Instead of fixing the aroma with a single word from the start, make four columns: variety name, region, white/red, and sweetness/dryness.

FIELD NOTE 03

International varieties are also used for comparison

Chardonnay, Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet, etc. are also grown. When blending both indigenous and international varieties, use the available sources to determine which contribute to fruit, acidity, and body. Comparing single-varietal and blends moves you from memorizing varieties to understanding winemaking.
