FIELD NOTE 01

Hills of the southwest

Drăgășani is a leading region in Oltenia. There are whites such as Crâmpoșie Selecționată, and reds like Negru de Drăgășani and Novac to study. The range of grape varieties in Romania cannot be described by Fetească-based grapes alone; this is a place where such diversity is clear.

FIELD NOTE 02

Match the varieties to the slope.

Prince Știrbey describes Cabernet on south-facing slopes, and Novac and Negru on east-facing slopes receiving morning sun. These are concrete examples of matching grape variety to land. For white Crâmpoșie, water retention of clay is listed as a vineyard condition.

FIELD NOTE 03

From hills to southern sandy soils

When broadly studying the area around Oltenia, distinguish between hill regions like Drăgășani and southern sandy vineyards. The overlap of administrative/historical names and official viticultural regions differs. Sorting by place names, geography, and grape varieties in three columns helps prevent confusion.
