FIELD NOTE 01

Use Iwanohara of Jōetsu as the starting point for your study

In Niigata, starting from the Iwanohara Vineyard in Joetsu, we want to trace Zenbei Kawakami’s grape breeding. The producer's history shows that simply planting imported varieties was not sufficient to adapt to the land’s conditions. The map marker is a representative point for Joetsu, but does not indicate all wineries or vineyards in Niigata Prefecture.

FIELD NOTE 02

From breeding to today’s blends

Muscat Bailey A, Black Queen, and Bailey Alicante A should not just be memorized as historical names; in current products, you can compare their roles. In Zenbei 2022, the three varieties are 71%, 23%, and 6%. The blend from the same producer may differ in past years, so you need to consult materials for the relevant vintage.

FIELD NOTE 03

Do not confuse the prefecture name with the GI for alcoholic beverages

Even if you find the GI place name Niigata, check if that designation applies to wine. The National Tax Agency’s GI Niigata for sake cannot be substituted as wine certification. Read the origin and production place on each wine’s label and product data; in addition to GIs, learn about the area's history and vineyard adaptations.

Key points of this article
