FIELD NOTE 01

Check that the blend totals 100%

Iwanohara Vineyard’s Zenbei 2022: 71% Muscat Bailey A, 23% Black Queen, 6% Bailey Alicante A. Total is 100%. The main grape is Bailey A, but it is not a single-variety wine. The blend shown by the producer for this vintage should not be directly applied to other products or prior Zenbei releases.

FIELD NOTE 02

Overlaying selective barrel use with blending.

Bailey A and Black Queen are described as being matured in new French oak barrels, while Bailey Alicante A is matured in older French oak barrels. When barrel selection (new vs old) is tracked by grape variety, the process becomes clearer than simply listing ‘barrel maturation.’ Do not supplement barrel volume or duration in months if not stated in the public explanation, and do not confuse vessels for maturation and fermentation.

FIELD NOTE 03

Connect viticulture through to blending.

The producer also explains yield adjustments and selection. Don’t only explain the finished flavor by grape ratio: read it as a continuous design—raw material condition, extraction, maturation, and blending. For exercises, tie the ratios to the barrels and note which elements you'd like to compare. The use of new barrels doesn't have to be directly equated to quality or optimal drinking order.

Key points of this article
