FIELD NOTE 01
Reading geography
Imereti is located inland in the west, with a wide range of climates and soils within the region. While describing it as the western part near the Black Sea is a starting point, not all vineyards share the same humidity or degree of ripeness. Check the distance from the eastern region of Kakheti on a map, then proceed to compare grape varieties and winemaking methods.
FIELD NOTE 02
Connect the varieties.
Tsolikouri, Tsitska, and Krakhuna are the key white varieties. For reds, there are varieties like Otskhanuri Sapere. Rather than trying to memorize unfamiliar names all at once, it's easier to link the three white varieties to their regions and confirm their roles when reading about individual blends.
FIELD NOTE 03
Go deeper through comparison.
The Imereti style introduced by the National Wine Agency differs from the Kakheti style, which adds all solids including skins to the qvevri, in that it only adds a portion. This introduces comparative extraction, but it does not mean all producers use the same ratios or number of days. Even with the same vessel, the amount of solids and duration of contact will alter the taste.
Connect geographic features like rivers and elevation, regional grape varieties, and specific winemaking methods/wine types.
