FIELD NOTE 01
From the Black Sea inland
Moving from the Black Sea coast in the west through Imereti and Kartli to Kakheti in the east, the influence of the sea and mountain positions changes. In Kakheti, the areas along the Alazani and Iori rivers are focal points. Racha-Lechkhumi sits inland to the northwest, and high-altitude Meskheti lies to the south. Do not try to explain the whole country with a single climate but start by mapping these location relationships.
FIELD NOTE 02
Separate the roles of names
Saperavi is a grape variety, Kindzmarauli is an appellation of origin, and Qvevri refers to the clay vessel used for winemaking and storage. Even when all three names appear together on a label, they do not belong to the same category. If you decide dryness by the variety name, or assume all wines from one country are amber, you could miss other styles within the same region.
FIELD NOTE 03
Considering a comparative analysis of the two bottles
In studying, first compare dry white wine and skin-macerated white from Kakheti. Then, advance to dry and natural semi-sweet Saperavi from the same region to see that color, tannin, and sweetness arise from different factors. Note grape, region, skin contact, and residual sugar, and make any unexplained differences your next questions.
In order: grape variety, appellation, vessel. Each belongs to a different category.
