Primitivo/Zinfandel: Three countries' names and the same grape variety
Names used in Italy, the US, and Croatia are organized by DNA comparison results. Even if they share a grape variety, the lineage of vines, vineyard, and winemaking are not necessarily the same.
Questions for this course
Are Primitivo and Zinfandel similar grape varieties or actually the same variety?
Before you start reading, briefly jot down your thoughts. You will rephrase them at the end.

DNA linking the two names
Research at UC Davis has confirmed that Zinfandel and Primitivo have the same DNA profile. Therefore, in comparative study, we treat the two as different names for the same variety. Only the names differ, and it is not a comparison of different raw grapes.
Croatian names also correspond
FPS introduces the Croatian Crljenak Kaštelanski and Tribidrag as being the same variety. Sorting out names across borders can be a clue to origin. However, the origin of a variety and the country of origin of a particular bottle are separate pieces of information.
Differences remain even within the same variety
FPS explains that there may be clonal differences between lineages grown separately in Italy and California. Even after confirming they are the same variety, there is still room for comparison of vineyards, harvest times, vine stock lineage, and winemaking. A difference in taste alone is not immediate evidence of a different variety.

Reading sources on Primitivo/Zinfandel: three countries' names and the same variety
The document below organizes learning material based on the sources listed at the end. Before answering the questions, make sure you understand what is being compared between the two columns.
This is a summary of regions, grape varieties, and methods as confirmed in the source. Where specific products or vintages are referenced, the target is clearly stated.
| Items for Comparison | Points common to the grape variety | Things to check for each bottle |
|---|---|---|
| Name | Primitivo, Zinfandel, Tribidrag and others | Label's region and product name |
| DNA | Confirming it’s the same grape variety. | Not necessarily identical down to vine lineage |
| Wine | You can compare with consistent grape varieties. | Vineyard, harvest, winemaking, and maturation |

What is the relationship between Primitivo and Zinfandel?
UC Davis DNA analysis has confirmed that the two are the same variety. If you count the difference in names as a difference in varieties, then in international comparisons, you end up treating the same grape source multiple times. Harmonize names first, then investigate differences in growing regions and winemaking to advance comparisons.
Which name does Tribidrag correspond to?
FPS identifies Tribidrag as the same variety as Zinfandel and Primitivo. This correspondence concerns varietal identity. This does not mean, however, that the origin of Italian or U.S. bottles suddenly changes to Croatia.
If it is verified as the same variety, is absolutely everything else the same?
Even within the same variety, there are clonal differences, and vineyard sites, harvesting, and winemaking conditions all differ. The variety name is a starting point for comparison, not a guarantee of an identical taste. When finding differences, also check specifically which conditions are matched and which are different.
