FIELD NOTE 01
Read as an eastern region
Quebec is a different province from Ontario, and adapting to harsh winters affects choices of grape varieties and vineyard management. You study not only vinifera but also grapes selected for cold-hardiness and disease resistance. Don't view hybrid varieties as mere substitutes for international grapes but instead see them as indigenous resources for the region.
FIELD NOTE 02
Range of grape varieties
Besides Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, Vidal, Seyval Blanc, and Frontenac are also compared. First, organize the timing of white and red grape ripening, then add differences in still, sparkling, and sweet styles. Do not predict taste just based on how unusual a grape's name may be.
FIELD NOTE 03
Check the IGP certification.
IGP Vin du Québec is a certification tracking province-grown grapes and local production processes. There is also a separate IGP Vin de glace du Québec, distinguishing standard wine from icewine certifications. Simply being sold in Quebec does not automatically mean the wine is certified.
Purchase location does not determine it. Check the origin and certification labeling.
PAUSE & REFLECT
Check your understanding.
If you buy a bottle in Quebec, is it necessarily an IGP Vin du Québec wine?
