FIELD NOTE 01

Assign reds by region.

We review Mavrud, Rubin, Gamza, Pamid, and Melnick-related varieties. By comparing the lighter reds like Gamza and Pamid with deeper reds, Bulgarian wine can be understood beyond just robust red styles. Record separately the red color tones, acidity, and tannin.

FIELD NOTE 02

Do not treat Melnik as a single entity

Shiroka Melnishka Loza is also called Broad-leaved Melnik, while Melnik 55 is also known as Early Melnik. Since producers cultivate these as separate varieties, do not decide they are the same variety based solely on information labeled simply as Melnik. Additionally, be attentive to overlap with place names.

FIELD NOTE 03

Add whites and international varieties

Adding whites like Dimyat, Cherven Misket, Tamyanka, and Keratsuda. Even though it is called Red Misket, the typical style is a white wine. Merlot, Cabernet, Syrah, and Chardonnay are also used either as single varieties or blends, and you can also learn about their combinations with local varieties.
