RELATIONSHIPS

Distinguish between geographic divisions and PGI/PDO: Comparative perspectives

Protected origin names

Read geography, grape resources, and production processes separately.

  • Geography

    Five study regions.

  • PGI

    Danube Plain, Thracian Lowlands.

  • PDO

    Individual appellations such as Melnik.

FIELD NOTE 01

Two major PGIs

Dunavska Ravnina (Danube Plain) and Trakiyska Nizina (Thracian Lowland) are major PGIs. Do not assume that geographic terms such as the Black Sea Coast or the Rose Valley automatically correspond to PGI names. Always check the registered names on the actual bottles.

FIELD NOTE 02

PDO is an individual appellation.

There are also PDOs like Melnik. Even if wineries are located in the same region, not all their wines necessarily carry that PDO. Check the grape varieties, production criteria, and which designation of origin is certified, together with the place name.

FIELD NOTE 03

Match the characters to their meanings.

If you match the Cyrillic Дунавска равнина, Тракийска низина, Мелник with Latin letters, it becomes easier to read the labels. Also, extraction of vintage, variety, Reserva, and other product names or indications should be done separately; do not infer barrel age from the place name.

Key points of this article
