FIELD NOTE 01

Limestone Coast region

Coonawarra is located in the southeast of South Australia. The region is relatively mild with significant maritime influence, and Cabernet Sauvignon is its flagship variety. Shiraz and Merlot are also grown; Coonawarra is not an appellation limited to a single grape variety.

FIELD NOTE 02

Read beneath the red soils.

Distinctive terra rossa is a red soil over limestone. By drawing a cross-section of the topsoil and underlying parent material, you move beyond mere memorization of soil names. Terra rossa is not exclusive to Coonawarra in the world.

FIELD NOTE 03

Do not make the soil itself directly into flavor.

Soil affects drainage, water retention, and how easily roots can grow. Avoid explanations like “since the soil is red, the wine will have a specific color or aroma,” which directly link soil color to wine. Even for Cabernet Sauvignon, compare with Margaret River and record differences including climate and winemaking.
