FIELD NOTE 01

Between the bay and the hills

McLaren Vale lies south of Adelaide. The topography around Gulf St Vincent and the Mount Lofty Ranges moderates the climate. Even in this warm Mediterranean region, vineyard elevation and exposure to sea breezes create differences.

FIELD NOTE 02

Lock in three red wines.

Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Grenache are key varieties. Especially with Grenache, differences in vineyard and producer expression make it a useful subject for study. Be sure to identify both single-varietal wines and blended reds.

FIELD NOTE 03

Link vineyards and extraction.

Even if a Grenache is relatively pale in color, do not assume the aroma and flavor are weak. Read into the producer’s intended style, skin contact, fermentation and maturation vessels. Combining regional introductions and detailed vinification notes reveals differences that cannot be explained by soil type alone.

Key points of this article

The combination of grape variety and winemaker choice produces different expressions. Do not judge region or quality by color intensity alone.

PAUSE & REFLECT

Check your understanding.
