FIELD NOTE 01

A region surrounded by seas on three sides

Margaret River sits at the south-western edge of the continent. Its position, surrounded by the sea, moderates the heat; summers are warm and dry, while winters are rainy. Cabernet Sauvignon is a major focus for reds, Chardonnay for whites.

FIELD NOTE 02

White blending

The Sémillon-Sauvignon Blanc blend is also a representative regional style. Even with the same Sémillon, the comparison differs between the Hunter's single varietal, bottle-aged, unoaked style and others. Picking out grape composition and fermentation/aging vessels from resources makes it easier to explain the differences.

FIELD NOTE 03

Broaden to Great Southern

In the Great Southern along the south coast of Western Australia, you can study Riesling, Cabernet, Shiraz, and more. Even within the same state as Margaret River, it is a separate region. Do not try to understand all western wines by just one appellation; read them with an eye on distance from the sea and internal subregions.
