FIELD NOTE 01
Lodi and the Delta
While Lodi is not a coastal growing area, it is positioned between Sacramento and Stockton, connected to the Sacramento–San Joaquin Delta. Being inland doesn’t mean there’s no sea influence at all—consider wind corridors and diurnal temperature variation.
FIELD NOTE 02
Concrete examples of the Mediterranean climate
Consider the combination of warm, dry summer days and cool nights. Rather than just annual average temperature, check sunlight during the growing season, water usage, and harvest conditions. Lodi is an important region for learning about Zinfandel, with some producers working with old vineyards.
FIELD NOTE 03
Further east to the mountain foothills
The Sierra Foothills is a unified area east of Lodi, spreading to the foothills of the Sierra Nevada. Use a map to check places like Amador or El Dorado. Distinguish flat inland valleys from the foothills, and try plotting locations where elevation changes on a map.
Consider the effect of wind and diurnal temperature differences around river deltas. The absence of a coastline is not the same as having no maritime influence.
