FIELD NOTE 01

Three West Coast States

Position California, Oregon, and Washington from south to north. However, 'West Coast states' and 'coastal vineyards' are not the same. Washington’s main region, Columbia Valley, is located east of the Cascade Range, utilizing irrigation under the dry rain shadow conditions.

FIELD NOTE 02

Segmenting California

From Napa and Sonoma in the North Coast down through Monterey, Paso Robles, and Santa Barbara in the Central Coast. Add inland regions such as Lodi and Sierra Foothills. Read from north to south, paying attention to corridors for ocean breezes and relative elevations.

FIELD NOTE 03

Make the East a central axis of study too.

In New York’s Finger Lakes, lakes are important; on Long Island, it’s the sea. Virginia offers themes such as Cabernet Franc, Viognier, and Petit Manseng. After reviewing grape varieties, origin labelling, and winemaking, proceed to detailed articles on labels and producer materials.
