FIELD NOTE 01
The eastern side of the mountain range
The Columbia Valley is in the rain shadow of the Cascade Mountains, resulting in arid to semi-arid conditions. Irrigation sources include the Columbia River, its tributaries, and groundwater. Separating the commonly wet image west of the mountains and the moisture conditions of the main vineyards is the starting point.
FIELD NOTE 02
Large AVA and subregions
Place Yakima Valley, Red Mountain, Horse Heaven Hills, etc. within Columbia Valley. Columbia Valley and Walla Walla Valley also extend into Oregon. In contrast, Puget Sound and others must be read under different conditions.
FIELD NOTE 03
See both red and white.
Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Chardonnay, and Riesling are main learning targets. In addition to sunlight and water management, examine vineyard location and harvest timing. Latitude alone cannot explain grape selection; even in the cool northern states, limiting red ripening to whites is inaccurate.
Add an explanation about the rain shadow created by the Cascade Mountains. The use of water also becomes part of the growing conditions.
PAUSE & REFLECT
Check your understanding.
Can the dryness of major regions be explained only by distance from the sea?
