FIELD NOTE 01
State, county, AVA
There are origin indications using states and counties, and AVAs defined as distinctive grape-growing regions. AVAs have names and defined boundaries, and some cross state lines. Columbia Valley, spanning Washington and Oregon, is a specific example.
FIELD NOTE 02
Check the proportion of origin.
According to the basic federal requirements, labelling a state or county requires at least 75% of the raw materials from that location, while AVA requires at least 85%. There are also conditions regarding the place of finishing, etc. Meeting the numbers alone does not guarantee that all labels are allowed; states may impose stricter regulations.
FIELD NOTE 03
Method is not determined by AVA alone
You cannot determine factors such as 100% Cabernet Sauvignon content or barrel maturation length from the Napa Valley appellation alone. Read other information such as grape variety, vintage, and “Estate Bottled.” It’s important not to memorize AVAs as a ranking system specifying nationwide variety or production method.

PAUSE & REFLECT
Check your understanding.
Does AVA's 85% refer to the ratio of the specified variety from the region?
