FIELD NOTE 01

Unity of the broad coastline

In the Central Coast, place names like Monterey, Paso Robles, and Santa Barbara are located within it. Conditions differ between coastal and inland sites, so do not treat this broad region as a single climate; break it down by constituent areas.

FIELD NOTE 02

East-West axis of Santa Barbara

With mountain ranges stretching east to west and open to the Pacific, fog and sea breezes flow in. The west side tends to receive more cooling from the sea, while further east, warm days and cool nights are pronounced. It helps to overlay both latitude and proximity to the sea on a map.

FIELD NOTE 03

Try positioning the varieties.

Know names such as Santa Maria Valley and Sta. Rita Hills, then move on to local Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Syrah, and other varieties. Rather than fixating on a single variety for the entire AVA, use detailed vineyard and producer information to compare ripeness and acidity retention.
