Pio Cesare: blending from multiple villages and Ornato
This is a family-run producer based in Alba, making Barolo since 1881. Along with the Barolo “Pio,” which combines plots from multiple villages, they produce single-vineyard wines such as Ornato. Whether a wine is a single-vineyard or not allows comparison of the geographical origin of the grapes.
List the grape variety and appellation common to both brands, and explain what Ornato as a vineyard name indicates in the raw material composition of each.

Pio made with grapes from five villages.
The official description of Barolo “Pio” lists a total of nine vineyards in Serralunga, Monforte, Novello, La Morra, and Grinzane Cavour. The variety is Nebbiolo. In this blend, the difference is not the variety but the location where the grapes were grown.
Scope of Ornato
Ornato is produced from small parcels within the vineyard of the same name in Serralunga d’Alba, with the first vintage dating to 1985. Ornato is included in Pio's list of sources, but the grapes for the Ornato label are limited to that vineyard. The vineyard name serves as both a component of blends and as the name of a specific wine.
Shared winemaking philosophy.
The current descriptions for both products state fermentation and maceration in stainless steel tanks, with a policy of mainly using large barrels and some small barrels for aging. This shared point alone does not mean the winemaking conditions were identical year to year. Compare the range of raw materials and separate from the vintage conditions you are actually comparing.
