Vietti: Timing of Combining Multiple Vineyards
A Piemonte producer based in Castiglione Falletto. They produce both Barolo blended from multiple vineyards and Barolo labeled with geographical designations such as Lazzarito.
Compare the two Barolos in terms of the grape sourcing range and blending stage.
Questions for this course
For Barolo from multiple vineyards, is it fermented altogether at harvest?
Before you start reading, briefly jot down your thoughts. You will rephrase them at the end.

Vinify each parcel separately
Vietti’s Barolo is described as being vinified and matured separately from the fruit of several MGAs, then blended before bottling. Blending the finished product is not the same as mixing everything from the start of fermentation.
Focus on Ravera
Ravera is a Barolo made from Nebbiolo sourced from the Ravera MGA in Novello. Compared to labels made from a blend of sites, this indicates a choice to narrow the source of fruit. Both are made from Nebbiolo.
Also check the type of barrel.
Barolo's standard production notes describe mainly large cask aging with some barrique, while Ravera specifies large cask aging. Since both origin of the grapes and vessel may differ, do not attribute flavor differences to MGA alone.

Interpreting Vietti documents: Timing of combining multiple vineyards
Compare the stated conditions in the documentation. Numbers specifying vintages should be treated as information for that specific year.
This summarizes materials published by producers, regional groups, and importers. Each source includes the publisher and the date the material was checked.

At which point are base wines from multiple MGAs blended?
The blending timing should be checked based on the winemaking process, not assumed from the final product's label. By vinifying and aging the raw wines from different MGAs separately, each base wine can be evaluated before final blending. Even if the wines are blended together at the end, the process will have preserved the differences between plots up until that point.
Which village is Ravera in?
Distinguish between the producer’s base and the village of their vineyards.
What is the grape variety common to both wines?
These are the common criteria when comparing the range of the raw material.

Explain in your own words
Compare the two Barolos in terms of the geographic range of grape sources and timing of blending.
Check after writing
- Did you specify the label, vintage, and scope of materials to be compared?
- Did you distinguish and explain the three items in the table?
- Did you separate verified facts from points to check further with additional references or tasting?
