Château de Beaucastel: Close Vineyards, Different Appellations

This is a producer located in Châteauneuf-du-Pape in the Southern Rhône. In addition to red and white wines from Beaucastel made with multiple traditional varieties, they also produce Coudoulet de Beaucastel Côtes du Rhône from adjacent land.

We compare Beaucastel and Coudoulet using maps and origin designation to clarify why adjacent vineyards cannot be labeled as the same cuvée.

Questions for this course

If vineyards are almost contiguous, do they have the same origin on the label?

Before you start reading, briefly jot down your thoughts. You will rephrase them at the end.

Beaucastel and Coudoulet

The official list classifies Beaucastel as Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Coudoulet as Côtes du Rhône. Even when producer names are the same, the regional designation cannot be grouped under a single origin.

The vineyard across the road.

The documents for Coudoulet describe vineyards east of Beaucastel, across the A7 autoroute. Even if the land is nearby and shares common features like rounded pebbles, that alone does not necessarily permit the use of the same appellation name.

Read about each white by label.

The list also includes Beaucastel Blanc, Roussanne Vieilles Vignes, and Coudoulet Blanc. Do not transfer red knowledge to the white blends; always check the full label name, color, and origin together.

What is the appellation of origin for Coudoulet?
The official list divides them into separate appellations of origin.

What can be inferred from the vineyards being close together?
Check the range of geography and appellations separately. Coudoulet is located east of Beaucastel and is described as having similar stony soils. Nevertheless, it is labeled as Côtes du Rhône. Separate similarity in soils from being included in the appellation boundary.

Where do you start when researching whites?
As there are several white cuvées, please specify your target.
