FIELD NOTE 01

Geography

Posavje includes Dolenjska, Bizeljsko-Sremič, and Bela Krajina. Use the positions of the Sava River and hills as starting points to divide the southeast into three districts. Even in neighboring districts, the influence of topography and climate is not uniform; it is important not to memorize district names just as the locations of the wineries.

FIELD NOTE 02

Representative grape varieties and wines

Traditional Cviček from Dolenjska is a lively red made from a blend of black and white varieties. In Bela Krajina, Modra Frankinja and Muscat-based whites are also important. Remember that a single famous wine does not represent all wines from a region—keep grape varieties and traditional names distinct in your notes.

FIELD NOTE 03

Deeper Perspectives

In Bizeljsko-Sremič, lepenice—underground storage facilities dug in sandy soils—provide insight into regional culture. By including sparkling wines, one can study the acidic style of Posavje from multiple angles. The features of storage cellars and the conditions of the vineyards should not be treated as the same thing; consider where along the winemaking process, from grape to finished wine, each exerts its influence.
