FIELD NOTE 01

Orientations of three regions

Podravje in the northeast, Posavje in the southeast, and Primorska in the west are the three main wine regions. The influence of the Alps, Pannonian Plain, and Adriatic Sea overlap, so even a small country has wide-ranging regional conditions. Don’t focus only on the Italian border; include inland hills on the map to get the full picture.

FIELD NOTE 02

Descend to 9 districts

Podravje consists of Štajerska Slovenija and Prekmurje. Posavje has Bizeljsko-Sremič, Dolenjska, and Bela Krajina. Primorska includes Goriška Brda, Vipavska Dolina, Kras, and Slovenska Istra. Do not put regions and districts into a flat hierarchy; learn them in a parent–child relationship.

FIELD NOTE 03

Don’t paint white wine countries with a single brush.

In whites: compare refreshing juice fermentation, skin contact, use of barrels and lees, or sparkling character. In reds, Refosco and Modra Frankinja appear. First, link region and variety; then add on the process to avoid the misconception that all Slovenian wine is orange wine.
