FIELD NOTE 01

Recaș in Banat

Recaș is the gateway region to Banat in the west. Both indigenous varieties such as Fetească Neagră and a wide range of international grapes are grown. By checking the producer’s technical information step by step—selection of grapes, fermentation, barrel aging—you can go beyond memorizing just the grape names.

FIELD NOTE 02

Minis' Kadarka

On the Crișana side's Miniș–Măderat area, Kadarka and other varieties are important. Balla Géza’s materials explain the use of large casks and used small barrels for Fetească Neagră and international red varieties. Do not automatically interpret barrel aging as new barrels only.

FIELD NOTE 03

Broaden your scope to the north

The official classification covers the hilly region combining Crişana and Maramureş. Banat is classified separately. Near the border, variety names may appear in multiple languages, so carefully distinguish between synonyms for the same grape and unrelated lookalike names.

Key points of this article
