FIELD NOTE 01
Tracing the hills of the east
The Moldova on this page refers to a region in eastern Romania. The area expands from Cotnari in the north to Panciu, Odobești, and Cotești in the south. It is distinct from the Codru region of the neighboring Republic of Moldova, with different countries and regulatory systems.
FIELD NOTE 02
Cotnari whites and sweet wines
Grasa de Cotnari, Fetească Albă, Tămâioasă Românească, and Frâncușa are traditional grape varieties. Sweet styles utilizing noble rot are important here, but residual sugar cannot be judged from variety names alone. The DOC specification covers not only still but also sparkling wines.
FIELD NOTE 03
Width of Vrancea
With wines such as Panciu, you study white, red, rosé, and sparkling separately. It’s important not to generalize the region’s overall style based only on notable sweet wines like those of Cotnari. Rather than explaining the region simply north to south by climate, identify the main varieties and wine styles by appellation.
